Matteo Restivo Set For World Championships After 200 Back Victory In Riccione
Matteo Restivo booked his ticket to Fukuoka with victory in the 200 back on the penultimate day of the Italian Championships in Riccione.
The championships are the first of two meets where swimmers can book a spot on the team for Fukuoka with the second being the Sette Colli – held at the iconic Foro Italico – in June.
Restivo – the 2018 European bronze medallist – added his name to the roster with a 1:56.96 effort in the 200 back, well inside the qualification time in Riccione.
Federico Burdisso came from 0.28 adrift of Piero Codia at halfway to take the 100 fly by 0.01 by 51.86 to 51.87.
The Olympic 200 fly bronze medallist has yet to book his ticket for Fukuoka, a year after he swam a 50.63 fly leg as the Italian men’s medley relay quartet matched Britain’s European record of 3:27.51 en-route to world gold.
Marco de Tullio came from second at the final turn to come past Matteo Ciampi and add the 200 free to the 400.
De Tullio blasted a fourth 50 of 26.72 to come home in 1:47.13 with Ciampi touching next in 1:47.65.
Edoardo Giorgetti won the men’s 200br in 2:12.34
Sara Curtis set an Italian junior record in the 50 free, the 16-year-old leading the way in 25.14, Ilaria Cusinato took the 200 fly in 2:09.03 and Anita Gastaldi won the 100 back in 1:00.92.
