Matt Kredich Gets Contract Extension, Raise from Tennessee

The University of Tennessee on Monday announced a contract extension through 2029 for head swimming and diving coach Matt Kredich.

The deal, per the Knoxville News Sentinel, includes a raise of $10,000 in his base salary. The contract extension runs through April 2029.

Kredich just finished his 19th year in Knoxville and his 12th in charge of the men’s and women’s programs. The teams both finished in the top 10 at NCAAs – sixth for the men and fourth for the women – in the same season for the first time in program history. Fourth was the best result in program history for the women, while the men’s placement was its highest since 2001. The Vols netted five silver medals and three bronze medals at the NCAA Championships and eight SEC championships.

The program produced a record 17 athletes competing in the Paris Olympics, more than double the seven who took part in the Tokyo Games in 2021.

Mona McSharry won a historic bronze medal for Ireland in the women’s 100 breaststroke. Erika Connolly added a third career medal with silver for swimming prelims on the U.S. women’s 400 freestyle relay. McSharry, Martin Espernberger, Jordan Crooks and Ellen Walshe all made individual event finals, while five swimmers set national records, including McSharry and Walshe as half of the Irish women’s medley relay.

“Matt has shown outstanding leadership in building one of the country’s top swimming and diving programs here on Rocky Top,” vice chancellor and director of Athletics Danny White said in a statement. “Under his direction, our program constantly sets new standards and is steadily moving toward becoming the best program in the nation!”

Kredich, whose first season on Rocky Top was 2005-06, has guided Vols to 90 SEC titles and nine NCAA crowns. The women’s team has finished in the top 10 at NCAAs each of the last six years and 11 times overall under Kredich.
