Mason Carlton and Rafael Miroslaw Announce Verbals to Hoosiers for 2021-22

NEW COMMITS: Santa Cruz, Calif. native Mason Carlton and Rafael Miroslaw of Hamburg, Germany have both pledged their verbal commitments to Indiana University as part of the Hoosiers’ class of 2025.

Both swimmers will join Jackson CarlileLuke BarrSean SwiftJosh MathenyLucas Piunti, and Henry Bethel in Bloomington in the fall of 2021.

A talented distance freestyler and 400 IMer, Carlton swims year-round with Quicksilver Swimming and owns four U.S. Open standards. He placed 17th in the mile at Juniors West in December where he earned five best times and won the 1000 free at Far Westerns in 2019. Last summer, he grabbed bronze in the 800m/1500m free combo and raced three events at Junior Nationals.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“Super excited to announce my verbal commitment to Indiana University! Thank you to all my coaches, friends, and family! GO HOOSIERS!!”

A current junior at Soquel High School, Carlton finished 10th in the 500 free at the 2019 CIF State Championships. The two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American is also a three-time CIF Central Coast Section Championship finalist.

His best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:28.94
  • 1000 free – 9:28.15
  • 1650 free – 15:31.96
  • 400 IM – 3:55.94

RAFAEL MIROSLAW

Miroslaw has represented Germany on the international stage, competing in the 4×200m free relay at the 2019 World Championships that finished eighth overall. At the 2019 European Junior Championships, Miroslaw was the lead-off the mixed 4×100m free relay, helping them to the gold medal and new meet record.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“Verbal commitment to Indiana = future Hoosier”

He finished fifth in the 200m free at German Nationals last summer and earned three best times at the FINA World Cup in November 2018. Miroslaw also competed in the 400m free at the 6th FINA World Junior Championships in 2017, finishing 19th in prelims.

His best times include:

  • 50m free – 23.19 (20.17)
  • 100m free – 49.54 (43.18)
  • 200m free – 1:48.69 (1:35.03)
  • 400m free – 3:57.87 (4:26.52)
  • 100m fly – 55.77 (48.98)
