Martin Malyutin Wins 200 Free On Opening Day Of Swim Cup Of Russia
Martin Malyutin came from third at the final turn to win the 200 free at the Swim Cup of Russia in Kazan.
The meet features Russian and Belarusian swimmers who are banned from the international stage and coincides with the World Championships in Fukuoka.
While Matt Richards was leading home a British one-two in Japan with Tom Dean in 1:44.30 to 1:44.32, Malyutin – who shared bronze with Duncan Scott at Gwangju 2019 – was coming home in 1:45.67 thanks to a 26.77 final 50.
Ivan Girev (1:45.79) and Roman Akimov (1:46.06) completed the podium.
Daria Rogozhinova won the women’s 400IM in 4:44.04.
They were the only finals of the opening day although there were a number of significant names in the semis.
Kliment Kolesnikov headed the 100 back, the Olympic silver medallist going 52.88, Evgenia Chikunova went 30.60 in the 50br with Ilya Shymanovich booking lane four in the 100br in 58.82.
