Marshall Hires Former Kentucky Standout Bailey Bonnett as Assistant Coach

Marshall on Tuesday announced the hiring of Bailey Bonnett as an assistant coach for the swimming and diving program.

Bonnett spent last season as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Kentucky, where the All-American was at the leading edge of a new wave of top swimmers for the Wildcats. She is one of many departures from the UK staff after coach Lars Jorgensen stepped down at the end of the season.

“I am extremely grateful and honored to be able to join Marshall’s program, and personally contribute my expertise to their already-found success,” Bonnett said in a university statement. “I look forward to working alongside Ian (Walsh), the staff and the swimmers this season. Go Herd!”

Bonnett spent five seasons at Kentucky, from 2018-22. The 2018 SEC Freshman Female Swimmer of the Year finished her career with nine career SEC bronze medals (three individual, six relay). She was a seven time All-American, including three times in the 200 breast and in the 400 individual medley as a fifth-year senior, and a seven-time honorable mention All-American.

“We are thrilled to have Bailey joining our staff,” Marshall head coach Ian Walsh said. “She is a driven, passionate coach that is eager to learn and be part of building something special.”

Bonnett left Lexington with school records in the 100 breast and 400 IM as well as one two medley relays. The native of Pittsburgh, Pa., qualified for U.S. Olympic Team Trials in 2021 and won a silver medal at Phillips 66 Nationals in the 400 medley relay. She was a five-time CSCAA Scholar All-America first teamer.

“She developed a strong connection with our staff and support staff throughout the process,” Walsh said. “Bailey has unique experiences both as a student-athlete and coach that will serve our women in our program. We’re excited to have her on board and are looking forward to the start of our season in a few weeks.”
