Marissa Inouye Triple Leads Miami Past SMU, Rutgers
Marissa Inouye won three events to help Miami to a tri-meet win over Southern Methodist and Rutgers in Coral Gables Friday.
Miami topped Rutgers, 194-84, and Rutgers, 165-114. SMU edged Rutgers, 148-134, in the other dual.
Inouye started her busy day with a win in the 200 freestyle, her time 1:46.63 for a 1-2 with teammate Savannah Barr. Inouye went 4:45.64 to win the 500 free, with Adrianna Cera third. Inouye wrapped it up with a time of 2:02.75 to win the 200 individual medley.
Giulia Carvalho led the Hurricanes to a sprint sweep. She went 22.24 to win the 50 free, then 48.89 to take home the 100.
Carvalho’s sprint triumphs were part of five consecutive events won by the Hurricanes in the middle of the meet. Emma Sundstrand started it by going 1:01.59 to claim the 100 breaststroke. Ashlyn Massey followed with a domination in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.40. Mary Kate Kelley followed Carvalho’s sprint double with a 1:57.07 in the 200 backstroke, a 1-2 result with Sarah Sensenbrenner.
Carvalho finished it off with a sweep of the 100 fly for Miami. She went 52.83 to win, ahead of Massey and Barr.
SMU kept the pressure on early in the meet. Mira Szimcsak won the 1,000 free in 9:55.53, an outstanding race in which she edged Cera by .18 seconds, rallying past her on the final 50. Jimena Leal’s time of 54.10 similarly snatched away a win in a thrilling 100 back, .08 ahead of Miami’s Taylor Jonker and .09 up on Kelley.
Szimcsak would return to finish second in the 500 free. Maddy Parker was second to Carvalho in the 50 and 100 free, the latter by a margin of .09. Rachel Anderson was the runner-up in the 200 IM, and the Mustangs won the concluding 400 free relay.
Rutgers didn’t come away empty-handed. Sofia Bartoloni led a sweep in the 200 breast, her time of 2:15.10 edging teammate Elysha Pribadi by .12 seconds. Pribadi was second in the 100 breast with Bartoloni third, then Pribadi placed third in the 200 IM. Blanka Berecz was the runner-up in the 200 fly.
