Marc-Antoine Olivier And Ginevra Taddeucci Lead Rankings After Opening Leg Of LEN Open Water Cup
Marc-Antoine Olivier and Ginevra Taddeucci top the men’s and women’s rankings respectively following the first leg of the LEN Open Water Cup in Eilat, Israel.
The men’s event was a thriller with Gregorio Paltrinieri leading the field through the 8320m mark in 1:30.43.3, ahead of Australian duo Thomas Raymond (1:30.43.6) and Nicholas Sloman (1:30.43.7).
Olivier, the Rio 2016 bronze medallist, was fourth, 1.7secs behind Paltrinieri in 1:30.45 before a final 1680m section of 17mins 11.2secs guided him to first place in 1:47.56.2.
Domenico Acerenza moved from fifth to second in 1:47.58.5 with fellow Italian Marcello Guidi streaking through from 11th to take third in 1:48.01.1.
Paltrinieri finished seventh in 1:48.07.3.
Taddeuci was the first European woman home behind Australian pair Chelsea Gubecka (1:54.02.2) and Maddie Gough (1:54.03.7).
The Italian clocked 1:54.04.4 with Angelica Andre of Portugal (1:54.55.9) and Hungary’s Bettina Fabian (1:55.11.7) also reaching the podium.
