Maggie MacNeil, Phoebe Bacon Share Big Ten Weekly Honors
Minnesota’s Phoebe Bacon and Michigan swimmer Maggie MacNeil shared the women’s swimmer of the week accolades in the Big Ten weekly honors, released Wednesday.
Minnesota’s Max McHugh was named the men’s swimmer of the week. Andrew Capobianco of Indiana and Minnesota’s Sarah Bacon were named the divers of the week. The freshmen of the week honors were shared liberally between Cal Groumi and Yigit Aslan on the men’s side and Letitia Sim and Sofia Lobova on the women’s side.
McHugh took home a pair of NCAA A cuts at the Minnesota Invitational. The senior placed second in the men’s 100 breaststroke (51.07) and third in the 200 breast (1:51.27). It’s McHugh’s sixth career Swimmer of the Week award.
MacNeil is up to five in her career. The senior Canadian Olympian and gold medalist also started in Minnesota with three wins, all in NCAA A cuts. She won the 50 freestyle (21.50), 100 free (47.15) and 100 butterfly (49.97) and added an A cut in the 100 backstroke (50.33) off the front of the 400 medley relay. She helped the Wolverines clocked auto NCAA times en route to wins in the 200 free, 400 free and 400 medley relays.
Phoebe Bacon was second in the 200 back in an NCAA A cut time of 1:50.48 at the Minnesota Invitational. She finished third in the 100 back and third in the 200 individual medley. She also helped the Wisconsin 800 free relay finish third.
Capobianco starred for the Hoosiers in a dual meet against Cincinnati on the way to his fifth career weekly honor. The senior won the 3-meter competition with 465.30 points and prevailed over the 1-meter field with 425.63.
Sarah Bacon set a Minnesota pool record with a score of 361.30 on 1-meter at the Minnesota Invitational, tallying the fourth-highest score in Golden Gophers history. Bacon also won 3-meter with a score of 385.45. She is recognized as the diver of the week for a fifth time in her career.
Groumi, an Israel native, was part of Michigan relays that earned auto cuts in the 200 medley, 400 medley and 800 free relay. He posted provisional times in the men’s 200 fly, which won at the Minnesota Invitational. He was second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 IM for his third freshman of the week honor of the season.
Aslan was second in the 1,650 freestyle and 10th in the 500 free at the Minnesota Invitational. Each swim was an NCAA B cut for the Turkish swimmer.
Sim finished second in the 100 breast, fourth in the 200 IM and ninth in the 100 fly at the Minnesota Invitational, earning an NCAA B cut in breast and fly. She helped Michigan’s 400 medley relay earn an NCAA A cut and win in 3:27.22. The Spanish Fort, Alabama, native is the freshman of the year for the second time this season.
Lobova finished in the top four at the Big Al Invitational in the 100 free, 100 fly and 50 free, getting NCAA B cuts in the former two. She also helped the Scarlet knights win the 400 free relay.
