Machine Aquatics’ Joe Schaefer Will Become a Mountaineer With 2020 Verbal to West Virginia
NEW COMMIT: West Virginia University has been handed their first verbal commitment for Fall 2020 from Annandale, Va. breaststroker Joe Schaefer.
Schaefer swims year-round with Machine Aquatics and owns the Winter Juniors standard in both breaststroke events. He most recently competed at NCSAs where his highest finish was a 23rd-place showing in the 200 breast after earning a trio of best times at the Potomac Valley Championships. This past summer, he finished 21st in the 100m breast at NCSAs and won the 200m IM at Potomac Juniors. Also competing for WT Woodson High School, Schaefer took sixth in the 100 breast and 12th in the 200 IM as a junior at the Virginia 6A State Championships.
He told Swimming World:
“Incredibly excited to announce my verbal commitment to West Virginia University! You can’t find a better coaching staff and team than WVU. Thank you to all my family, friends, coaches and teammates who have helped me get to this point. Can’t wait to be a mountaineer!”
His best times include:
- 50 breast – 26.67
- 100 breast – 56.28
- 200 breast – 2:02.62
- 200 IM – 1:54.07
When he arrives in Morgantown as a member of the class of 2024, Schaefer will add his talents to a breaststroke group that’ll include David Dixon and Fausto Huerta. He would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 breast at the 2019 Big 12 Championships where West Virginia took second overall in the team standings.
