Lukas Märtens and Isabel Gose Set For Short-Course Worlds As Germany Announce Team Of 19

Lukas Märtens and Isabel Gose will head to short-course worlds in Budapest next month to conclude a year in which they won Olympic gold and bronze respectively.

The pair are part of a 19-strong Germany team, comprising six women and 13 men, for the meet which runs from 10-15 December at the Duna Arena.

Märtens became the first German man to win Olympic gold in the pool since 1988 when he claimed the 400 free in Paris, 36 years after Michael Gross of West Germany won the 200 fly and Uwe Dassler of East Germany also won the eight-length event.

That followed his bronze behind Kim Woo-Min of South Korea and Australia’s Elijah Winnington at the World Championships in Doha.

Gose won 800 silver and bronze in the 400 and 1500 in Doha before taking bronze in the longest race in the pool in Paris, pulling away from Simona Quadarella to set a German record of 15:41.16.

Also competing will be Florian Wellbrock, who on Friday won the World Cup finale in Saudi Arabia in what was his first appearance since finishing eighth in the open water in Paris.

The 27-year-old, who set the 1500 WR of 14:06.88 en-route to gold at the 2021 short-course worlds in Abu Dhabi, told World Aquatics: “It was so important to race here especially after my disappointing Olympics and for sure I’m really excited to race in short course in December.”

Melvin Imoudu and Lucas Matzerath – fourth and fifth respectively in the 100m breaststroke in Paris – are also selected along with Nina Sandrine Jazy and Marius Kusch.

The Germany team left the 2022 edition in Melbourne with two bronze medals courtesy of Anna Elendt (100m breaststroke) and Kusch (100m butterfly).

“We have a powerful team of seasoned and younger swimmers starting out and expect a lot again,” said sports director Christian Hansmann.
