Luca Urlando Scratches 200 Free, Pushing Carson Foster Into Tonight’s Final
One noticeable change can be seen on the start list for tonight’s final in the men’s 200m free: Carson Foster now has a lane.
Foster originally missed advancing to finals after finishing ninth during semifinals by just three-hundredths of a second. However, after Luca Urlando scratched the event, he has a chance to earn himself a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team.
Tonight’s 200m free final will now include:
1. Kieran Smith – 1:45.74
2. Zach Apple – 1:46.22
3. Townley Haas – 1:46.30
4. Drew Kibler – 1:46.70
5. Blake Pieroni – 1:46.84
6. Andrew Seliskar – 1:46.95
7. Patrick Callan – 1:47.00
8. Carson Foster – 1:47.03
With prelims and semis of the 200m fly today, Urlando likely scratched to focus on the event in which he holds the top seed in 1:53.84. He would’ve been the sixth seed in the 200m free with a time of 1:46.93.
This is a big – and important – chance for Foster, who finished third in the 400m IM by half a second on night one after leading for the first half of the race.
Foster, who just wrapped up his freshman year at Texas, will join fellow Longhorns Townley Haas and Drew Kibler in finals. Texas has produced at least one man on Team USA’s 4x200m free relay team in every Olympic Games since 1988.
