During prelims of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section meet on May 3rd, Luca Urlando broke the National Public High School record in the 100 fly. His time of 45.88 eclipsed Caeleb Dressel’s mark of 45.89 set in 2013.

Urlando’s splits:

  • 50 fly – 21.56
  • 100 fly – 45.88 (24.32)

Urlando, who competes for C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento and is only a high school junior, also destroyed his own sectional meet record of 46.70 he set last season. The current overall National High School record set by Joseph Schooling in 2013 still stands at 45.52 – a record that could be broken by Urlando tomorrow during Sac-Joaquin finals, whose best time in the event is 45.62.

Urlando also competed in the 200 IM, posting a time of 1:43.87 en route to breaking the section record. His best time in that event sits at 1:42.99; he’ll also be aiming for David Nolan’s National High School mark of 1:41.39 set back in 2011.

Also competing for DART Swimming year-round, Urlando is a member of the United States National Team and owns the 15-16 National Age Group Record in the 100m fly. After placing third in the 200m fly at Nationals this past summer, he then went on to sweep the 100m and 200m fly at the Junior Pan Pac Championships.
