The University of Louisville has temporarily paused all voluntary swimming and diving activities for two weeks after three members of the program tested positive for COVID-19, according to a release sent out by the school.

The members of the team that have tested positive have not been identified and all have been quarantined for at least two weeks. Louisville swimming and diving’s suspension of activities began Saturday, July 18.

“All proper procedures and protocols are being followed,” the school said in the release.

Louisville swimming and diving is coached by Arthur Albiero, who helped both men’s and women’s programs finish in the top five in 2019. He held a press conference last month detailing how the Cardinals were able to return to practice in phase one.

He discussed in the press conference that swimmers must fill out a questionnaire every day before practice, explaining if they have experienced any symptoms of COVID. The athletes were not allowed to enter the facility until the questionnaire was complete. They must stay at least six feet apart and wear masks at all times except when they are in the water. Locker rooms were not open for use and they came in and out of the facility wearing their swimsuits. The Louisville athletic trainers were also on deck taking temperatures of the athletes before they entered the facility.

The Louisville swimming and diving team got only an hour of swimming in at their facility each day. 13 swimmers and 2 divers had been allowed in the facility and had been able to swim one per lane as the lanes are naturally eight feet apart.

Arthur Albiero said the team has been back in the water for two weeks, and is just focusing on maintaining a feel for the water without preparing for any competitions in the near future.

The Louisville men were seeded to finish 10th at NCAAs before the meet was cancelled while the women were seeded to get 13th.
