Louisiana DIII State Record Holder Derek Zhang Sends 2022 Verbal to Pitt Panthers
NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Derek Zhang of New Orleans, La. has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Pittsburgh beginning in the fall of 2022.
Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at the University of Pittsburgh! I would like to thank my coaches, friends, and family that have supported me and helped me through this process. Go Panthers!!”
A talented backstroker and butterflyer, Zhang trains year-round with Nu Wave Swim Club and picked up six new best times at the 18&U Winter Championships – LA YNWL in December where he won the 100 free and 100 back. Last winter, he secured bronze in the 100 back at Louisiana Seniors and finaled in both backstroke events at College Station Sectionals.
In Summer 2019, he posted five top-15 finishes at Louisiana LCM Seniors before going on to notch a personal best at the NCSA Championships. He’s also the state record holder in the 100 back for 13-14 boys.
His best times include:
- 50 back – 23.07
- 100 back – 49.44
- 200 back – 1:52.38
- 100 fly – 49.50
- 50 free – 21.53
- 100 free – 47.38
Currently a junior at Lusher Charter School, Zhang is already a four-time individual Louisiana DIII State Championship finalist. He won the 100 back and 100 fly as a sophomore while taking second in both the 100 back and 100 free during his rookie season.
In 2019, he set a new DIII state record in the 100 fly with a time of 50.61. He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts in the pool and in the classroom.
