Livi Wanner Wins Four Times as Minnesota Sweeps Nebraska, South Dakota

Minnesota won a state-school tri-meet on Saturday, taking home three wins over Big Ten foe Nebraska and South Dakota. Sprinter Livi Wanner was a big part of the women’s victories, while the men triumphed, 241-59.

Women’s

  • Minnesota 196, Nebraska 104
  • Minnesota 251, South Dakota 49

Men’s

  • Minnesota 241, South Dakota 59

Wanner was on both winning Minnesota relays, the 200 medley and 400 freestyle, joined by Mina Kaljevic on both. Wanner went 23.11 to win the 50 free, edging teammate Morgan Thomas. Her time of 50.79 was in a 1-2 with Kaljevic. Kaljevic won the 200 free, with sister Anja Kaljevic third.

Claire Reinke won all three of her events. She swept the butterfly races, then got to the wall first in the 200 individual medley by less than four tenths over Nebraska’s Marissa Laurin.

Faith Johnson led a 1-2-3 result in the 100 back for the Golden Gophers. Elna Widerstrom won 3-meter and was second to teammate Vivi Del Angel on 1-meter.

Nebraska had plenty of wins, just not the depth. South Dakota native Gwen Jorgenson dominated in the distance events, winning the 1,000 free, 200 back and 500 free. The 200 back was a 1-2 result with Laurin. Maia Hall won both breaststroke events – the 100 was a 1-2 with JoJo Randby – and finished third in the 200 IM.

On the men’s side, freshmen accounted for four victories in their collegiate debuts. Jacob Johnson led the way, winning the 200 fly and 100 free and swimming a leg on the victorious 400 free relay. Luke Brennan claimed the 1,000 freestyle, and Joe Polyak posted three top-three finishes, led by a win in the 200 breast.

The veterans had their say, too. Kaiser Neverman led the way, the graduate student winning the 100 breast and 500 free. YuTong Wang won both diving events.

Ian Steffen claimed the 100 back and 100 fly. Tyler Hansen (200 free), Luke Leonidas (200 back) and Ryan Slonac (200 IM) added victories.

Nick Rounds went 20.98 in the men’s 50 free to pick up the Coyotes’ lone win. Alex Parkinson was the runner-up in the 1,000 free.
