Lisa Mamie Sets Swiss 100 Breast Record Of 1:06.60; Detti Rattles Italian 400 Free Mark At Sette Colli

Lisa Mamie set a new Swiss 100m breaststroke record of 1:06.60 and Gabriele Detti came within 0.50 of his Italian 400 free mark on the opening night of the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome.

Mamie had set a national record of 1:07.11 in the semis at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju and on Tuesday she became the first Swiss woman to go sub-1:07.

Detti set a new Sette Colli mark of 3:43.73, leading from start to finish to cut 0.48 from his own record set in 2016, weeks before he won bronze at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

There was also a new Belgian record of 4:09.91 for Valentine Dumont in third behind Giulia Salin and Anna Egorova over eight lengths.

There were a number of fine performances in the iconic Foro Italico which is hosting the three-day event which normally attracts a stellar international field given its annual June date, weeks before major championships.

Martina Caramignoli won the women’s 1500 free in 15:56.06, Alessandro Miressi took the men’s 50 free in 21.93 and Federico Burdisso led home the men’s 100 fly in 51.85.

Melanie Henique sent down a sizzling 50 fly of 25.77 – a season’s best and second in the rankings behind only world-record holder Sarah Sjostrom in 2020, Silvia di Pietro took the 50 free in 24.91 and Silvia Scala went 28.04 in the 50 back.

Mewen Tomac set a French age group record in the 50 back as he dipped inside 25secs for the first time in 24.88, the 18-year-old leading home Simone Sabbioni (25.13) and Michele Lamberti (25.25).

Mamie And Dumont Make History In The Eternal City; Detti Sizzles

The Foro Italico has borne witness to many fine breaststroke performances and Tuesday was no different as Mamie and Arianna Castiglioni produced a real duel.

Mamie was 0.09 ahead at 50 and she maintained her lead throughout despite the Italian’s relentless probing, the Swiss setting the new record o.26secs ahead of Castiglioni whose time of 1:06.86 was just 0.50 off her own national mark.

Martina Carraro was third in 1:07.08 with 15-year-old Benedetta Pilato just off the rostrum in 1:07.38.

In the 400 free, Detti went out in 25.84 – the only sub 26 of the field – and was always in control.

He was more than a second clear of Marco De Tullio at 200 and came home in the fastest time in 2020 – albeit that being completely disrupted and distorted by the coronavirus – a sliver away from his national record set at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju.

De Tullio was second in 3:44.94 with Domenico Acarenza third in 3:46.88.

Salin led for all but 50m as she held off a fast-finishing Egorova by 0.08secs to take the women’s equivalent.

Salin, of Nuoto Venezia, took the lead on the second 50 and was 1.14secs ahead of Egorova at halfway only for the Russian to come back with a final 100 of 61.01, falling short with Dumont third in the new national mark.

Caramignoli traded the lead in the longest race with world champion Simona Quadarella before going ahead with 350 to go.

The 29-year-old, who won gold at the 2015 Summer Universiade and bronze at the 2014 Europeans, pulled away with each length and a final 50 of 30.77 saw her clock a time that would have been good enough for fifth at last year’s world titles in Gwangju.

Quadarella touched in 16:03.69 with Salin taking her third medal of the night in 16:11.79.

Miressi – who won gold in the 100 free at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow – was the only man to go sub-22 in the dash.

Leonardo Deplano was second (22.10) and Andrea Vergani third in 22.26.

Di Pietro took gold in the women’s equivalent, reversing the one-two in the 50 fly in the opening event of the evening as she beat Henique 24.91 to the Frenchwoman’s 25.11.

Federica Pellegrini was third in 25.18.

Burdisso came from second at halfway to take the 100 fly in 51.85 ahead of European champion Piero Codia (51.95) and 2012 European bronze medallist Matteo Rivolta (51.97).

There are exciting times ahead for Burdisso who at 18 is 12 years Codia’s junior and 10 years younger than Rivolta.

Nicolo Martinenghi led all the way to take the 100br in 59.43 ahead of Fabio Scozzoli (1:00.31) and Federico Poggio (1:00.41).
