Leon Marchand Wins 200 Free, 100 Breast in Arizona State’s Final Home Dual Meet

Leon Marchand won the 200 freestyle and 100 breaststroke at Arizona State’s final home dual meet of the season, a sweep of Grand Canyon University.

The top-ranked men’s team rolled to a 232-66 decision. The women prevailed, 247-53.

Marchand went 1:32.64 in the 200 free to win the 200 free, edging teammate Hubert Kos by just short of a second. He clocked in at 53.02 in the 100 breast, just ahead of John Heaphy’s 53.23 and the 53.27 of Andy Dobrzanski.

The French Olympian led off the Sun Devils’ A 400 free relay with a time of 42.39. He suffered a rare defeat in the 200 medley relay, the junior splitting 23.16 in breaststroke as his B relay fell to ASU’s nominal C relay (Kos, Dobrzanski, Owen McDonald, Jonny Kulow).

McDonald won the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Zalan Sarkany did the distance double. His mile time of 14:28.09 trounced his school record of 14:41.65 from Pac-12s last year. Jack Wadsworth won the 100 back over Kos.

Jack Dolan picked up a win for the senior class by besting Ilya Kharun in the 100 free. Kharun had topped Cam Peel in the 50. Kulow won the 100 fly ahead of Alex Colson.

The Arizona State women celebrated Senior Day with three vets getting wins.

Katrina Marty led off the winning 200 medley relay. She was second to teammate Ieva Maluka in the 100 back, Maluka having anchored the 200 medley relay. Third in the 100 back was senior Athena Clayson, who went 1:58.38 to win the 200 back.

Also on the medley relay was senior Lindsay Looney. She won the 200 fly (1:54.21) and 100 fly (53.10), with classmate Jade Foelske second both times.

Erin Milligan won the 200 free (1:46.61), the 50 free (22.87) and the 100 free (49.30), the latter a spot up on Maluka. Deniz Ertan completed the freestyle sweep by winning the 500 and 1,650. Zoe Summar won the 100 breast and finished second to teammate Emma Gehlert in the 200 breast. Sonia Vaishnani prevailed in the 200 IM, and Kayden Hayes was the top scorer in both diving events.

Sam Jennings and Jonathon Rom got Grand Canyon’s only wins on the day. Jennings went 1:45.55 to beat Wadsworth in the men’s 200 back. He had been third in the 100 back. Rom clocked in at 1:55.66 to win the 200 breast.
