Leon Marchand Swims NCAA’s Fastest Time in 200 IM; Ilya Kharun Scorches 1:37 200 Fly to Join Special Company

The Arizona State men defeated Stanford in a Pac-12 showdown on Friday, 156.5-115.5

The Stanford women won 191.5-98.5.

Arizona State’s Leon Marchand won a head-to-head duel in the 100 breaststroke.

Marchand got to the wall in 51.46, just three hundredths of a second ahead of Stanford’s Ron Polonsky (51.49). Marchand’s time was the third-fastest in the NCAA this season.

The 200 breaststroke was not nearly as close. Marchand won in 1:51.71, well ahead of teammate David Schlicht (1:53.56). Marchand’s time was the fifth-fastest of the season in the NCAA.

Marchand also dominated the 200 IM with a win in 1:38.78, which was the fastest time in the NCAA this season to cap his meet in stellar fashion.

In another individual showdown, Stanford’s Andrei Minakov won the 100 butterfly in 44.16, just ahead of Arizona State freshman Ilya Kharun (44.72).

Kharun won the 200 butterfly in 1:37.93, the fastest time in the NCAA this year and on the doorstep of the NCAA record set by Jack Conger (1:37.35). Only four men have been sub-1:38 in the 200 fly, with Kharun eyeing the record as the season moves into its closing stages.

In the men’s meet, Arizona State’s Hubert Kos, Marchand, Kharun and Jonny Kulow won the 200 medley relay in 1:22.24, which was the second-fastest time this year, behind their own 1:21.85 at the NC State Midseason Invitational.

Kos won the 100 backstroke in 45.28 and 200 back in 1:38.96.  Kulow claimed the 50 free in 19.19 and 100 free in 42.44.

Arizona State’s Zalan Sarkany won the 1000 freestyle (8:38.13) and 500 free (4:13.95).

Stanford’s Henry McFadden won the 200 free (1:32.88). Jack Ryan won 1-meter diving with 388.43 points and Hunter Hollenbeck won 3-meter (393.68).

Stanford’s Rafael Gu, Jonathan Tan, Andres Dupont Cabrera and Minakov won the 400 free relay in 2:49.15.

In the women’s meet, Stanford’s Natalie Mannion, Lucy Thomas, Lillie Nordmann and Amy Tang won the 200 medley relay in 1:36.58.

Mannion won the 100 backstroke in 52.76 and 200 back in 1:53.86. Thomas won the 100 breaststroke (58.93). Tang claimed the 50 free in 22.33 and 100 free in 48.57.

Stanford’s Aurora Roghair won the 1000 free (9:29.24) and 500 free (4:39.94). Kayla Wilson won the 200 free (1:43.64). Caroline Bricker won the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.26. Gigi Johnson won the 100 butterfly (52.42). Lucy Bell won the 200 IM in 1:55.67.

Stanford’s Emilie Moore won 3-meter diving with 299.55 points. Lauren Burch won 3-meter with 298.43.

Tang, Wilson, Thomas and Janelle Rudolph won the 400 free relay in 3:15.34.

Arizona State’s Lindsay Looney won the 200 butterfly in 1:52.61.
