Leon Marchand Goes 3-for-3 to Lead Arizona State Split with Wisconsin

Leon Marchand won all three of his events, including a comical margin of victory in the 400 individual medley, as Arizona State split a dual meet with Wisconsin on Saturday.

The Sun Devils won the men’s meet, 183-112, while Wisconsin claimed the women’s meet, 187-111.

Marchand won the 100 breaststroke, going 53.16 seconds. He added the 200 backstroke crown in 1:42.82. In the 400 IM, though, he left everybody in his wake, going 3:41.59 to win get to the wall 16 seconds before the nearest finisher. The Frenchman also swam breaststroke on the winning 400 medley relay.

Grant House added wins in the 200 free and 100 free for the Sun Devils. The latter was a 1-2-3 finish with Patrick Sammon and Jack Dolan. Dolan was second to teammate Max McCusker in the 50, and McCusker led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 fly. Second in that race was 200 fly winner Alexander Colson.

Wisconsin got two wins in the back half of the race, with Matthew Segal taking the 200 breast and Jake Newmark prevailing in the 500 free. Daniel Muller won both diving events for the Badgers.

The women’s distance contingent led the way for Wisconsin. Paige McKenna won the 1,000 free in a 1-2-3 finish. Abby Carlson and Blair Stoneburg went 1-2 in the 200 free, then Stoneburg won the 500 free with Elle Braun, who was third in the 1,000, in second place and McKenna third.

Wisconsin swept the sprints via Abby Wanezek. She also anchored the winning 400 medley relay and lead off the victorious 200 free relay. Phoebe Bacon was on both of those relays. In between, she won the 100 back and 200 back decisively, going 54.50 in the former and 1:57.20 in the latter.

Elizabeth Moore won the 100 breast and was second in the 200, Mallory Jump claimed the 100 fly and Kit Greenburg swept both diving events.

Charli Brown led Arizona State. She won the 400 IM and was second to Bacon in both backstroke events. Emma Gehlert won the 200 breast and was runner-up in the 100. Jade Foelske won the 200 fly, was second in the 100 fly and third in the 400 IM.
