Lenton Hopeful for Great Eight at World Champs
MELBOURNE, Australia, October 25. LIBBY Lenton wants to make a statement with the 2008 Olympics in Beijing less than two years away. Lenton has announced that she'll attempt to qualify for eight events at next year's World Championships in Melbourne. She'll get the chance at tackling that schedule when the Australian Trials for the World Champs are held in December.
Lenton will try to qualify for the World Champs in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, along with the 50 and 100 butterfly events. At the World Championships, she's also expected to handle legs on the 400 and 800 freestyle relays and the 400 medley relay. The world-title event will take place over eight days, making the arduous schedule negotiable for Lenton.
The Aussie Trials will be held from Dec. 3-10 and Lenton could be in position to challenge world records in the 100 and 200 freestyles. The former world-record holder in the 100 free, Lenton had her mark broken by Germany's Britta Steffen at the European Championships in August. Recapturing the standard is certainly within reach. Lenton contested seven events at this year's Commonwealth Games.
"I'm keen to race all these events and see how I handle it. I'm really excited about it," Lenton said in an article in The Australian.
