Learn Ryan Lochte’s Backstroke Breakout

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 8. OLYMPIAN and current world record holder in the 200 meter backstroke, Ryan Lochte is highlighted in this month's Swimming World technique spread.

Glenn Mills, Swimming World Magazine's Technical Advisor, breaks down Lochte's backstroke breakout.

One of the key elements of this analysis is how Lochte uses his entire body to maintain speed into the first stroke. Mills points out that too many backstrokers sacrifice a loss of speed by breaking through the surface of the water first then taking their initial pull. The demonstration illustrates that Lochte initiates his first pull while his body is still underwater, thus he is able to sustain speed into the initial stroke.

The photos which accompany this article provide a clear visual of the four components of Lochte's backstroke breakout. No matter what your level of swimming or coaching is, readers will find this content to be of great interest and practical value.
