In the earlier heats of the 1500, Leah Smith swam the second fastest time in the world with a 16:01.02. Smith did not have a long course time in the race and was entered with a short course time, thus she swam in an earlier heat. Smith now has the second fastest time in the world for 2017 behind Katie Ledecky (15:35.65) from Santa Clara.
Hannah Moore of NC State won the heat at night with a 16:08.68. She will be off to World University Games at the end of August with her swims this week. Ashley Twichell of North Carolina Aquatic Club also swam in an earlier heat and she placed third at 16:10.63, ahead of Ally McHugh at 16:16.20.
Sierra Schmidt (16:19.59), Summer Finke (16:22.94), Joy Field (16:27.91) and Megan Byrnes (16:28.60) also placed in the top eight.
