Lander Valley Three-Peats, Brynlee Busskohl Sets Record at Wyoming 3A State Championships

The Wyoming Girls 3A State Swimming & Diving Championships took place on Nov. 3 at Laramie High School. Lander Valley High School was crowned team champions for the third-straight year, finishing with a total of 279 points.

Lander’s 4×50 medley relay set a new 3A State record, as did Lyman’s Brynlee Busskohl in the 100 breast. Lander’s Anastasia Cornale was named Athlete of the Meet and Worland’s Juli Warren earned Athlete of the Year honors.

Lander’s Olivia Fowler, McKenzie Lilygren, Cornaleand Molly Fehringer combined to win the opening event of the 4×50 medley relay in 1:51.96 after setting a new 3A State record of 1:51.00 during prelims. Lyman took second in 1:53.27 and Worland finished third in 1:57.80.

Soon after, Fowler was back in the water to claim first place in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.57. Riverton’s Josie Dike finished second in 2:06.08 as Douglas’ Sheridan Mathis grabbed third in 2:07.97. Dike found herself on top of the podium in the 100 free for the second-consecutive year with a swift 55.08 ahead of Newcastle’s Hannah Gross (55.45) and Powell’s Caitlyn Miner (55.93).

Fowler also won the 100 back, bettering her prelims swim to win the gold in 1:00.56. Gross earned the silver in 1:02.60 and bronze went to Lyman’s Harper Hewitt in 1:05.58. Warrenfinished five seconds ahead of the field in the 200 IM, winning the race in 2:14.31 to defend her title. Second went to Lander’s Ashlon Koch (2:19.80) and third went to Lilygren (2:20.06).

Buffalo’s Emi Wagner sprinted to the top of the podium in the 50 free, winning in 24.62 as the only swimmer under the 25-second barrier. Miner (25.02) and Sublette’s Emma Rogers (25.59) finished second and third, respectively.

Cornale was the only swimmer in the field under the minute-mark in the 100 fly, posting a convincing win in a time of 58.73. Lyman’s Brooklyn Busskohl got her hands to the wall in 1:01.76 for second and third went to Sublette’s Natalie Hunt (1:02.74). Cornale’s second win of the day came in the 500 free where she won by 20 seconds in 5:25.20, besting Koch (5:45.15) and Powell’s Elizabeth Liggett (5:49.04).

Brynlee Busskohl was victorious in the 100 breast (1:07.36), finishing ahead of Warren (1:08.57) and Lilygren (1:09.34). Busskohl’s prelims time of 1:07.96 broke the 3A State record of 1:08.02 set back in 2003, and she re-broke it at finals.

Douglas’ Mo McPherson dove to first place on the 1-meter diving with a final score of 366.55. World’s Kyra Klinghagen took second with 338.15 points and Jac’s Olivia Roberts took third with a score of 324.40.

Buffalo won the 4×50 free relay in 1:41.73, two seconds ahead of Lander (1:43.58) and three seconds faster than Powell (1:44.75). Lander’s Fowler, Lily Gose, Koch and Cornale concluded the meet with a 4×100 free relay win in 3:43.69. Buffalo (3:50.09) was second and Sublette (3:54.56) was third.
