From www.usswim.org – PERTH, AUSTRALIA – USA’s Jenny Thompson won her third gold medal of the World Championships, and Lenny Krayzelburg and the men’s 400m freestyle relay added two more golds for Team USA.
Thompson, 24, of Dover, N.H., who anchored last night’s 400m freestyle relay, swam a lifetime best to win the 100m butterfly in 58.46, establishing a new meet record. She also won the world title in the 100m freestyle earlier in the meet.
Krayzelburg, 21, of Los Angeles, Calif., won the 100m backstroke world title in 55.00. Krayzelburg, born in Odessa, Ukraine, became a U.S. citizen in 1995.
The U.S. men’s 400m freestyle relay also won a world championship tonight in 3:16.69. Scott Tucker led off the relay, followed by Neil Walker, Jon Olsen, and Gary Hall, Jr. Australia earned silver in 3:16.97, and Russia won bronze in 3:18.45.
Kristy Kowal, 18, of Reading, Pa., the 100m breaststroke champion, won silver in the 200m breaststroke in 2:26.19, dropping almost two seconds off her lifetime best.
Teammate Jenna Street, 15, of Johnson City, Tenn., won bronze in the event, also establishing a lifetime best. Street went 2:26.50.
