Klete Keller Rescues 18-Year-Old in Jet Ski Accident; Mom: ‘Gave My Son Another Chance at Life’

Five-time Olympic medalist Klete Keller can also be known as a lifesaver for his actions earlier this month in Florida earlier this month. Keller, who competed at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics, was on a boat when he saw a young man crash his jet ski. According to 7News, Keller saw the man, 18-year-old Camden Cooper, launch into the air and slam the water. When the man did not surface, Keller knew something was wrong.

Keller jumped off his boat, where he was spending time with his wife, Lindsey, and swam about 100 yards to Cooper, who had been knocked unconscious. While treading water, Keller performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and Cooper eventually opened his eyes. Cooper was taken to the hospital with a fractured cheek bone and concussion.

“Probably gave him 10 breaths — and probably about the 9th breath, I said, ‘God please save this boy,'” Keller said to WEAR News. “And I gave him one more breath and his eyes opened and he was looking straight up at the sky.”

Keller and his wife visited Cooper in the hospital and the Olympian spoke of the weight of the situation.

“It’s been life changing,” Keller said. “Our lives will never be the same and I’ll never approach my life the same.”
