Klete Keller and Attorneys Ask for Delay in Sentencing for Jan. 6 Insurrection Felony Charge
Attorneys representing Klete Keller, a three-time U.S. Olympian and a confirmed participant in the 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol protesting the results of the 2020 Presidential election, have asked a federal judge to delay Keller’s sentencing hearing, currently scheduled for next month.
Keller, who admitted to entering the U.S. Capitol unlawfully on January 6, 2021, pleaded guilty in September 2021 to a felony charge of acting to obstruct an official proceeding. As part of his agreement with prosecutors, the Department of Justice dropped the other six counts that Keller had been charged with. The sentencing guideline for Keller’s charge is 21-27 months in prison, but CBS News’ Scott MacFarlane reported that another defendant who took a similar plea was sentenced to only eight months.
Now, Keller is hoping to reduce the sentence even further, according to the LA Times’ Nathan Fenno. According to Fenno, “has asked a federal judge to delay Keller’s July 7 sentencing in connection with the U.S. Capitol attack in order to facilitate continued cooperation with law enforcement.”

Keller, who won two gold medals, one silver and two bronze between his three appearances in the Olympics, retired from swimming after the 2008 Olympics, and his participation in the January 6 coup attempt was quickly condemned by members of the swimming community.
