Kirsty Coventry has been selected as Zimbabwe’s flag bearer for the Olympic Opening Ceremonies on Friday night, she shared on Instagram.
Coventry explained the honor,
“I’m so proud to announce that I will be the ZIMBABWE FLAG-BEARER at the Opening Ceremony of the Rio2016 Olympics. Sport has the power to bring us together but our Flag has the power to keep us united. When I walk into the Olympic Stadium on 5 August 2016, the weight of our Flag will be heavy but it will be lifted with the hope of millions.”
The 32 year old also carried the flag in London in 2012. Headed to her fifth Games, the two time Olympic gold medalist has the world’s 18th best time this year in the 200 backstroke.
Other swimmers serving as their nation’s flag bearers include Nada Al Bedwawi, Federica Pellegreni, Stephanie Au, and Vahan Mkhitaryan.
