Kirsty Coventry Looking to Add Role With Zimbabwe Olympic Committee
Kirsty Coventry retired from swimming after her fifth Olympic Games this past summer, but she’s kept busy in the interim. In September, she joined the World Surfing Association as Vice President, and now she’s in the running to be Vice President position of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee.
Running against Zimbabwe Volleyball Association President Federick Ndlovu, Soccer League President Martin Kweza and incumbent VP Thabani Gonye, Coventry is considered the favorite for the position, according to a report from AllAfrica.com.
Coventry swam in each Olympic Games from 2000 to 2016 and won seven Olympic medals, including gold in the 200 back in 2004 and 2008. She broke the world record in that event three times and was the first woman to swim under both 2:06 and 2:05. In recognition of her outstanding career, she carried Zimbabwe’s flag in the Opening Ceremony for both the 2012 and 2016 Games.
Currently, Coventry also works in a variety of roles for the World Anti-Doping Agency, on its Foundation Board and Athlete Committee, and she serves as an adviser for the Tokyo 2020 Coordination Committee.
