SYDNEY, Nov 16 – Australian swimming great Kieren Perkins announced his retirement on Thursday, just eight weeks after winning a silver medal at the Sydney Olympics.
Perkins, 27, won gold in the 1,500 metres freestyle at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics and narrowly missed out on becoming the first man to win the same swimming event at three Olympics when he finished second behind Grant Hackett in Sydney.
During a glittering career, Perkins also won numerous world and Commonwealth titles and still holds the world record for 800 and 1500.
He told a news conference he plans to take up a career in sports management.
