Kentucky Wildcats Pick Up Verbal from Backstroker Abbie Shaw for 2020

NEW COMMIT: The University of Kentucky has earned a new verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from high school junior Abbie Shaw of Niwot, Colorado.

Primarily a backstroker, Shaw does her club swimming with Elevation Athletics and owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 100 back. She most recently competed at Phoenix Sectionals where her highest finish was a 15th-place showing in the 100 back after racing both backstroke events at Juniors West in December. This past summer, she recorded three best times at Colorado LCM Seniors and had five finals appearances.

Also competing for Niwot High School, Shaw is a six-time Colorado 4A State Championship finalist. She was the 200 free runner-up and placed third in the 100 back as a junior after finishing sixth and second, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at the University of Kentucky!! Thank you to my family, friends, and coaches who have helped me get to this point. I can’t wait to spend 4 years with such an amazing team and group of coaches! GO CATS!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.46
  • 100 back – 55.32
  • 200 back – 2:01.55
  • 100 free – 53.04
  • 200 free – 1:54.68

When she arrives in Lexington as a member of the class of 2024, Shaw will add her talents to a growing backstroke legacy. Although her best times are just outside of scoring range at the SEC Championships, she has continuously made improvements each season and will join a training group led by Sophie Sorenson.
