Katie Meili Doubles, Ryan Lochte Wins Four Medals at Bolzano International Swim Meet

BOLZANO – The U.S. contingent had a strong start at the Bolzano International Swim Meet with Katie Meili doubling up to lead the way. Ryan Lochte wound up with four medals in four tries.

Natalie Coughlin took home a close call in the women’s 100-meter free against fellow American Madison Kennedy, 53.51 to 53.52.  Erika Ferraioli wound up third in the final with a 53.68.

Marco Orsi hit the wall in 47.22 to win the men’s 100-meter free, while Ryan Lochte took second overall in 47.80. Steffen Deibler beat his brother Markus to the wall for third, 48.03 to 48.33.

USA’s Katie Meili powered her way to a 30.44 to win the women’s 50-meter breast.  That’s just a bit off her ninth-ranked season best of 30.28 from the Tokyo stop of the FINA World Cup. Molly Hannis raced her way to second in 30.50. Lisa Fissneider touched third in 31.11.

Fabio Scozzoli, who stands third in the world with a 26.37 from the Dubai stop of the FINA World Cup, took the men’s 50-meter breaststroke crown with a 26.80.  Christopher Steeples placed second in 27.55 with Andrea Toniato tying Marek Botik for third with 27.58s.

Jessica Fullalove clocked a 59.76 to win the women’s 100-meter back.  Elena Gemo (1:00.21) and Carlotta Zofkova (1:00.43) rounded out the top three.

Lochte uncorked a 51.34 to win the men’s 100-meter back for his second medal of the night.  That swim moved him up to 14th in the world this year. Arkady Vyatchanin touched second in 51.72 with Niccolo Bonacchi earning third in 52.92.

Silvia Di Pietro topped the women’s 50-meter fly in 26.15 with Elena Di Liddo placing second in 26.54. Amanda Weir snatched third in 27.23.

Steffen Deibler took down Lochte in the men’s 50-meter fly, 23.12 to 23.68.  Mark Weber raced to third in 24.26.

Meili doubled up with a 59.21 in the women’s 100-meter IM, while Laura Letrari touched second in 1:00.11. Natalie Coughlin earned a second medal with a 1:00.18 for third.

Markus Deibler then snagged the men’s 100-meter IM with a 53.04, while Lochte finished second in 53.31 for his fourth medal of the day. Marco Orsi wound up third in 53.35.
