Katie Ledecky Poised for Third Win at U.S. Open; Regan Smith Scratches 100 Fly Final (Heat Sheets)
The Friday night finals session at the U.S. Open in Greensboro, N.C., will feature finals of the women’s and men’s 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The stars of the meet are in the women’s competition, as three of the five women’s events feature a U.S. Olympic medalist as the heavy favorite.
Katie Ledecky, who has already won the 800 free and 400 free during the first two days in Greensboro, will be the top seed in the women’s 200 free final by almost four seconds. She swam a 1:56.06 in prelims, while Erin Gemmell was the only other swimmer to break 2:00. Meanwhile, Regan Smith was the top seed in both the 100 fly and 100 back after prelims, but the American-record holder in the 100 back will focus on that event in the final after withdrawing from the 100 fly.
Also in action will be Leah Smith as the top seed in the women’s 400 IM, while distance star Bobby Finke will try his hand at the 400 IM. Finke was the NCAA champion in 2021 in the short course yards 400 IM, and he has some abilities in all the strokes beyond just his signature freestyle.
