Katie Ledecky, Michael Andrew Nail Down Top Seeds at TYR Pro Series in Westmont
The second day of the USA Swimming TYR Pro Series stop in Westmont, Illinois featured many of the sport’s biggest names, headlined by Katie Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel. One night after winning the 1500-meter freestyle with the 15th-fastest time in history, Ledecky nailed down the top seed for the final of the 400 freestyle, on the strength of a 4:02.80 performance.
In the men’s 100 freestyle, three men cracked the 50-second barrier, with Maxime Rooney leading the way in a mark of 49.42. Dressel, who claimed the Olympic title at last summer’s Games in Tokyo, followed in second place with a time of 49.62, followed by Ryan Held at 49.68. For the women, the top seed went to Abbey Weitzeil in 54.41.
Two of the most-impressive times from the morning session were produced by Michael Andrew and Hali Flickinger. Andrew paced the 100 breaststroke with the only sub-minute clocking, going 59.86 to finish a little more than a second ahead of Nic Fink (1:00.98). Flickinger, meanwhile, was superb in the 200 butterfly, as the Olympic bronze medalist in the event checked in with a swim of 2:06.67.
The women’s 100 breaststroke will be entertaining during the evening finals, as Lilly King (1:07.33), Annie Lazor (1:07.72) and Lydia Jacoby (1:08.76) all cruised through the morning. King and Jacoby have won the past two Olympic titles in the 100 breaststroke while Lazor was a Tokyo medalist in the 200 breaststroke.
In other action, Zach Harting led the way in the men’s 200 butterfly in 1:59.76 and Jake Mitchell topped the prelims in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:54.71.
