AUSTIN – Katie Ledecky turned up the heat against the rest of the participants in night one of the Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin.
Women’s 100 free
Swimming World World Swimmer of the Year Katie Ledecky certainly started the night off right with a blistering 54.55 to win the women’s 100-meter free.
That’s now her third swim under 55 seconds, breaking her lifetime best of 54.89 set during prelims this morning.
Ledecky is certainly looking to expand her schedule, now that she’s locked down the distance freestyle events. Not only has she started to put together an amazing 200 free to make it into the 800 free relay discussion, she’s starting to make strides in the 100 not only for Team USA for also for Team Stanford collegiately.
Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, typically a dominant force on the FINA World Cup series and the reigning Swimming World European Swimmer of the Year, took second tonight in 54.66.
NYAC’s Megan Romano claimed third overall in 54.79 as the only other swimmer to clear 55 seconds in the finale.

Men’s 100 free
California’s Nathan Adrian, always a threat in the sprint frees as the top sprinter in the U.S., put on a show in the finale with a time of 49.11.
That’s not a terribly fast time for Adrian, but he’s certainly getting himself ready for a strong 2015 by getting his hand to the wall first. This part of the Arena Pro Swim Series tends to be the time that a favorite will get tripped up, but Adrian held firm.
Conor Dwyer turned in a 49.60 to place second overall in the 100 free, while California’s Ryan Murphy picked up third-place honors in 49.88.
Tucson Ford’s Matt Grevers, the preliminary leader with a 49.70, just missed a podium paycheck with a fourth-place 49.96.
SwimMAC’s Ryan Lochte, still bouncing back from his toughest career year in 2014, topped the B final in 50.02.

SwimMAC’s Micah Lawrence put on a show in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke finale, winning by more than half-a-second as she charged her way to a 2:25.75.
Lawrence cut four seconds from her preliminary time, and came up just a second short of her in-season best of 2:24.68 from the 2012 Charlotte UltraSwim event.
California’s Marina Urzainqui edged Aggie’s Breeja Larson, 2:26.42 to 2:26.82, for second-place honors. Gator’s Hilda Luthersdottir wound up fourth overall in 2:28.81 as the top three proved to be much faster than the rest of the finale.

California’s Josh Prenot cleared his in-season best in the men’s 200-meter breast with a time of 2:12.17.
Prenot absolutely demolished the field, winning by more than a second, as he cleared his previous mark of 2:12.79 from the TYR Fran Crippen Memorial Swim Meet of Championships meet in 2014.
BJ Johnson put up a time of 2:13.38 to win second-place honors, while Alabama’s Anton McKee chased down third in 2:14.36.
In a battle of the teenagers, NCAP’s Andrew Seliskar downed 15-year-old pro Michael Andrew, 2:16.22 to 2:16.76, for fifth and sixth place.

Women’s 400 free
Katie Ledecky remained on fire as she smashed a loaded field in the women’s 400-meter free with a ridiculously fast time.
Out under world-record pace at the 200-meter mark (1:57.99), Ledecky charged to the win in 4:00.47. That’s the seventh-fastest time all time in the event, giving Ledecky six of the top eight swims ever.
Only Federica Pellegrini has been in that range with a 3:59.15 and 4:00.41 back in the techsuit-fueled 2009.
Hosszu, who typically is winning gold at events like this, took silver behind Ledecky for the second time with a 4:09.17, well back as she focused on the silver-cash after knowing she wasn’t going to catch Ledecky.
Elizabeth Beisel, the Pro Swim Series cash leader after Minneapolis, took third in 4:09.62 to collect some more valuable points and cash as she looks to win the BMW lease.

Women’s 100 fly
Noemie Thomas had enough in the tank to hold off a hard-charging Katie McLaughlin of Mission Viejo for the women’s 100-meter fly title.
Thomas raced her way to a 58.57, just off her season best from 2014 of 58.25 that put her 20th in the world rankings.
McLaughlin, meanwhile, charged her way to second in 58.77, tying her lifetime best from the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships. McLaughlin is certainly closing in on the 17-18 U.S. National Age Group record of 58.41 set by Felicia Lee back in 2010.
NCAP’s Cassidy Bayer finished third overall with a 59.31 as the 15-year-old still has plenty of time to drop to catch Mary T. Meagher’s 1981 record of 57.93 for 15-16 year olds.

Men’s 100 fly
Texas’ Jack Conger crushed the 52-second barrier for the first time in the men’s 100-meter fly as he blasted the field with a sizzling time of 51.64.
That swim decimated his previous lifetime best of 52.51 from the 2013 World University Games, and would have ranked him eighth in the world last year. That’s still fifth among Americans in 2014, but getting into the 51-second range puts Conger in the discussion going forward.
Texas’ Tripp Cooper finished second overall with a time of 52.91, while NCAP’s Andrew Seliskar touched third with a time of 53.20.
SwimMAC’s Ryan Lochte picked up fourth place overall with a time of 53.23.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Kirsty Coventry made her return to the sport as part of an Arena Pro Swim Series in Austin record in the SwimMAC 400-meter free relay.
Kathleen Baker, Katie Meili, Coventry and Becca Postoll raced their way to a 3:47.78 for the win. Splits are shown below.
Coventry previously competed at the 2012 London Olympics, where she finished sixth in both the 200-meter IM and 200-meter back. She also was elected to the IOC Athletes Commission that year.
