Katie Grimes, Claire Weinstein Lead Big Night For Sandpipers At Fran Crippen Swim Meet Of Champions

While many of the top United States stars are in Illinois this weekend for the latest TYR Pro Series stop, the Sandpipers of Nevada have opted to compete at the annual Fran Crippen Swim Meet of Champions in Southern California. And during Friday night’s action, Katie Grimes and Claire Weinstein turned in superb performances at the Marguerite Aquatic Center.

Racing the 200-meter butterfly, Grimes continued to display her wide range of talent by winning the event in a career-best time of 2:08.77. The 17-year-old Olympian and World Championships medalist won by more than a second over teammate Bella Sims, who touched the wall in 2:10.36. Weinstein was third in 2:13.17.

Weinstein, however, was the top performer in the 400 freestyle, where she logged a personal best of 4:06.70. A National Team member, the 16-year-old showed she is progressing toward the World Championships Trials in fine form, as she placed ahead of Sims. A University of Florida recruit, Sims was strong in 4:08.41.

In Saturday action, Grimes is slated to contest the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley. Grimes is the reigning silver medalist from the World Champs in the 400 IM. Sims is also entered in both events, and given her time in the 400 free, something stellar could be in the mix in the 200 freestyle.
