EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY, November 22. KARA Lynn Joyce of Ann Arbor Pioneer High School was involved in four national high school records today during prelims of the Michigan High School Division I State Meet held at Eastern Michigan University. Last week, as announced on SwimInfo, Joyce signed a national letter of intent to swim at the University of Georgia for the next four years.
Here's a rundown of Kara Lynn's accomplishments this day:
* She swam the 100 yard free in 48.69 (split 23.37), breaking the national public school record of 49.34 set by Nicole Haislett in 1989, and the national interscholastic mark of 49.33 set in 2000 by Christina Swindle, who will also be swimming this weekend at the Florida High School Championships.
* She led off Pioneer's record setting 200 Yard Free Relay (1:32.77) in 22.04. Her 50 time destroys her own national public school mark of 22.73 set last year as well as Swindle's national interscholastic standard of 22.33 set last year.
* The Ann Arbor relay time obliterates the public school and interscholastic record of 1:34.54 set by St. Charles (IL) in 1999.
* She then anchored Pioneer's public school record-setting 400 Yard Free Relay (3:25.91) in 48.79 (split 23.04). The old record was 3:26.01 by St. Charles (IL) in 1999. However the interscholastic record stands at 3:24.08 and is held by The Bolles School of Jacksonville, Florida.
Kara Lynn also swam a state record 200 Free of 1:46.75 (split 24.38-51.08-1:18.81), the nation's fastest time this season, and will try for Sippy Woodhead's longstanding national interscholastic mark of 1:45.98 tomorrow.
The Ann Arbor Pioneer relay teams were the following:
200 Free Relay: 1:32.77. Kara Lynn Joyce-12 (22.04), Margaret Kelly-9 (23.46), Leigh Cole-9 (23.47), Jennifer Merte-12 (23.80)
400 Free Relay: 3:25.91. Leigh Cole-9 (52.45), Melissa Jaeger-12 (52.35), Jennifer Merte-12 (52.32), Kara Lynn Joyce-12 (48.79).
Except for the 400 free relay, the swims were all new pool records at EMU.
