Junior Pan Pacs: Erin Gemmell Sets Second Meet Record to Win 200 Free

Erin Gemmell’s Junior Pan Pacs is off to a fast start.

The 17-year-old set a pair of meet records on the opening day of the meet in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the women’s 200 freestyle. The latter earned her a gold medal in the first evening session.

Event-by-event recaps of the first night of swimming:

Erin Gemmell pulled away from the field and stayed away, winning the first final of the meet in 1:56.15. It lowers the meet record she set in the morning (1:56.66) and is just .01 off her best time. That time is the 10th-fastest in the world this year.

Australia’s Jamie Perkins put in a chase over the final 50, but she was too far behind. She took silver in 1:57.34. Kayla Wilson rounded out the podium at 1:58.42. The Australians who went 1-2 in the B final (Milla Jansen in 1:59.44 and Olivia Wunsch in 1:59.56) would’ve been fourth and fifth, respectively, in the A final.

Second was Maximus Williamson of the United States in 1:48.21, just edging Canada’s Adam Wu by .05. Rex Mauer of the U.S. finished fourth in 1:49.16. He and Australia’s Anders McAlpine (1:49.31) both cracked 1:50.

Henry McFadden of the U.S. won the B final in 1:49.01.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Daniel Diehl again downed his national age-group record in the 100 back. His time of 53.27 undercut the time he set in the morning of 53.40, which upended the 15-16 NAG he’d set earlier this year of 53.59.

His time also further distances himself from the Junior Pan Pacs record of 54.07 which had been set by Jack Conger back in 2012.

American Josh Zuchowski charged late to get silver in 54.51. He caught a fading Hidekazu Takehara of Japan, who hung on for bronze in 55.51. Fergus McLachlan of Australia was fourth in 56.04.

Keaton Jones of the U.S. won the B final in 55.18, the third-fastest time of the night. (Each nation is limited to two A finalists.) Hudson Williams of the U.S. finished in 56.27 for ninth, but the sixth-fastest overall time.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Japan made its presence felt with a 1-2 finish. Airi Mitsui led the way, pulling away from the field with a composed and impressive performance. Her 2:07.82 was a best time, and it downed the Junior Pan Pacs record set in 2016 by Cassidy Bayer at 2:08.48.

Second was countrywoman Yasuki Fujimoto in 2:09.63, just .08 up on American Alex Shackell. Tess Howley wasn’t far back for the Americans in 2:09.86. The Americans owned the third-, fourth- and fifth-fastest times of the night, with Bailey Harman winning the B final in 2:10.58.

Aaron Shackell added to the record-downing in an American 1-2. Shackell, the top seed from prelims, went a best time of 1:55.81. That’s nearly two seconds faster than the 1:57.42 he entered with and quicker than the 1:56.15 he laid down in the morning.

It also dashed the Junior Pan Pacs record set in 2014 by Andrew Seliskar at 1:55.92.

Silver went to American Thomas Heilman, clear from the rest of the pack in 1:58.32. Japan took spots three and four, with Ei Kamikawabata going 1:58.32, .04 up on Seiya Shinkai. Japan won the B final with what turned out to be the night’s fifth-fastest time, a 1:59.82 from Tomoyuki Matsushita.

Women’s 800 Freestyle

The top two swimmers in the evening session put on a show, racing all by themselves. When the wash settled, it was Jillian Cox who got to the wall first, in a best time of 8:30.38, to win gold for the United States. She edged out Australian Jamie Perkins by a miniscule six hundredths.

Perkins looked to have the edge going into the final 50, but as the two went stroke for stroke, Cox just got the better of her.

The bronze medal came from the morning, in an event where the limit of two swimmers per nation even in the fastest heat seems particularly untenable. Michaela Mattes did her work early to win bronze in 8:35.78. Turns out that her .07-second win over countrywoman Kayla Han meant the difference of a medal. Han did drop more than five seconds off her entry time.

Third in the final and fifth overall was Japan’s Ruka Takezawa in 8:36.91.

Men’s 1,500 Freestyle

Joshua Staples was running second at the 1,300-meter mark. You wouldn’t know it by the 20-meter margin of victory 200 meters later.

The Aussie delivered a magisterial final 200 meters to get the win in 15:18.54. It’s a best time from him, trimming five seconds off his seed time. He was clear of the field by nearly nine seconds.

Alec Enyeart was the man in the lead for most of the way before Staples swamped him with his charge. Enyeart, the top seed, had enough to hang on for silver, but with a twist: He shares it would countyman Josh Parent, both going 15:27.36. That’s a best time for Parent by nearly 3.5 seconds.

For comparison over the last 200 meters, Staples split 59.46 and 58.75. Parent went 1:02.61 and 1:00.77. Enyeart came back in 1:03.79 and 1:03.73.

Fourth place went to Riku Yamaguchi of Japan, one of the morning swimmers, in 15:28.06. American Bobby DiNunzio (15:31.72) also bested the fourth finisher in the evening final, Hiroyoshi Miyaki of Japan (15:31.82). Japan finished fourth, sixth and seventh.
