Junior Pan Pacs – Day 4 Prelims: Maximus Williamson Seeking Gold in 200 IM
The final session of prelims at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships saw 15-year-old American Maxiumus Williamson lock down the top seed for the final of the 200-meter individual medley. Williamson put together a performance of 2:00.90 to finish ahead of the Japanese duo of Tomoyuki Matsushita (2:01.01) and Yuta Watanabe (2:02.47).
In addition to chasing the gold medal, Williamson will try to break the two-minute barrier for the first time in his career during the championship heat. A native of Texas, Williamson is a little more than a second off the National Age Group record (15-16), which is held by Carson Foster at 1:59.45. Earlier in the meet, Williamson was the silver medalist in the 400 individual medley, where he clocked in at 4:17.58.
Already the winner of the 400 individual medley, Japan’s Mio Narita is a swim away from completing the medley double. Narita, who is scheduled to race at next week’s World Junior Championships, earned the top seed for the final of the 200 IM behind a prelim effort of 2:13.59. That mark was more than a second ahead of the 2:14.57 by Canadian Ashley McMillan, who was followed in third by American Gracie Weyant (2:15.53).
In the women’s 50 freestyle, Australia’s Milla Jansen was quickest in the morning, going 25.39. But she’ll have American star Erin Gemmell to hold off at night, along with the United States’ Anna Moesch. Gemmell has won the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle and was timed in 25.42, with Moesch next at 25.50. Aussie Hannah Casey touched in 25.56.
On the men’s side, Americans Diggory Dillingham (22.69) and Kaii Winkler (22.74) qualified first and second in the 50 free, with Australian Flynn Southam clocking 22.75 for the No. 3 seed. Southam earlier won gold medals in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle.
Japan’s Kotomi Kato went 2:28.35 for the fastest time in the women’s 200 breaststroke, followed by Team USA’s Piper Enge (2:28.65). For the men, Japan’s Yamato Okadome (2:13.77) and Singapore’s Nicholas Mahabir (2:13.86) were the top qualifiers in the 200 breaststroke.
