Junior Pan Pacs – Day 4 Finals: Maximus Williamson Crushes NAG Record (15-16) in 200 IM
The Junior Pan Pacific Championships have featured several National Age Group records over the past few days in the 15-16 classification. There were marks from Thomas Heilman in the 100-meter freestyle and 100 butterfly. There was a record from Daniel Diehl in the 100 backstroke.
Now, Maximus Williamson has joined the party.
Seeded first entering the final of the 200 individual medley, Williamson backed up that status and more when he captured the gold medal in 1:59.01. Williamson’s effort bettered the former NAG record in his age group, which stood to Carson Foster at 1:59.45 since 2018. Just a 15-year-old, Williamson will have plenty of time to take the record lower, and pursue standards in other events. Earlier this week, Williamson was the silver medalist in the 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle.
Williamson was out in 26.02 for the opening butterfly leg amd surged into a commanding lead on the backstroke, which he covered in 29.50. A 35.67 split on breaststroke kept the young American in control and set the stage for a chase at the NAG record. A 27.82 finish got the job done, and also allowed Williamson to break the meet record of Chase Kalisz, which was 1:59.51 from 2012.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay
Fueled by Thomas Heilman’s butterfly split of 51.71, the United States held off Australia for the gold medal in the 400 medley relay. Team USA touched in a meet record of 3:36.65 and withstood a closing flurry from Flynn Southam, who anchored Australia in 47.87 and helped his squad to a time of 3:36.96.
Daniel Diehl got the United States off to a 54.24 start on the backstroke leg and Zhier Fan checked in at 1:01.52 for the breaststroker.
