Junior Pan Pacs, Day 3 Prelims: Charlotte Crush After 100 Fly Mark; Leah Shackley Pulls Double
Charlotte Crush put a prelims scare into the Junior Pan Pacs record in the 100 butterfly, while Leah Shackley is safely through in two events in the third day of prelims at the meet in Canberra.
Crush led the field in the girls 100 butterfly with a time of 58.55. She’ll be hunting the meet record of 58.38 set in 2018 by Maggie Mac Neil of Canada, who three years later would become the Olympic champion in the event. Crush has been 58.45.
Second in that race was Shackley, who went 59.09. She has been 57.98.
Shackley, who set the meet record in the 100 back, returned later in the session to take the top time in the 200 back in 2:09.63. She’ll face a battle from Teagan O’Dell in that one in the night session in Canberra.

Girls 400 freestyle
Kennedi Dobson led the way for the U.S. in 4:1.79. That makes her the top seed in finals, though the field will likely be chasing Madi Mintenko, who went 4:11.01 for second in prelims. She held the top time entering the meet in 4:07.53. Mintenko won silver in the 200 free.
Canada’s Ella Crosgrove was a distant third in 4:16.82, just ahead of countrywoman Julia Strojnowska.
The third-fastest time of the morning was American Kayla Han in 4:12.64, though she’s locked out of the final by the limit of two per nation.

Boys 400 freestyle
Aiden Hammer posted the top time in 3:51.65 for the United States. The U.S. had two of the top four, with 200 free champ Luka Mijatovic fourth in 3:52.40. In between was two Japanese swimmers, with Kazushi Imafuku second in 3:52.18, .18 ahead of Asaki Nishikawa. Imafuku won silver in the 800 free.
The other two medalists form the 800 are set to miss out. Gold medalist Luke Ellis was the fourth American and seventh overall in 3:53.48. Kaito Tsujimori, the bronze winner, was third among the Japanese swimmers and fifth overall.

The U.S. posted the top tree times, with Charlotte Crush in 58.55, Leah Shackley in 59.09 and Audrey Derivaux in 59.19. Derivaux won the 200 fly.
Jessica Cole of Australia is the top non-American in 59.26. She and Kim Do-Yeon of South Korea (59.74) complete the quintet of those to break a minute.

South Korean senior record holder Kim Young-Beom led the way with a time of 52.07. He went 51.65 in June. American August Vetch finished second in 52.96, followed by Rowan Cox in 53.20. Argentina got a big swim from Ulises Cazau to get into the final in fourth.

Short rest mattered little to Leah Shackley, who went 2:09.36 to nab the top seed in the 200 back. Audrey Derivaux likewise had a quick turnaround to finish fifth in 2:12.98 though third among the Americans.
Second in the A final is Teagan O’Dell of the U.S. in 2:09.89. She entered with the top seed of 2:07.97. Chiaki Yamamoto of Japan is the third seed in 2:12.66, .05 over Canada’s Madison Kryger.

Aiden Norman, winner of the 100 back, put the 200 back field on notice with the only time under two minutes. He went 1:58.11 to win prelims, backing his field-best seed time of 1:57.75.
Second was Gavin Keogh of the U.S. in 2:00.87. He is the lone American entered. Ethan Ekk, the runner-up in the 200 free, finished third in 2:02.06. Japan’s Haruto Izumi was fifth.
