Junior Pan Pacs – Day 3 Finals: Erin Gemmell Completes Freestyle Triple With Meet Record in 400 Free
Three events. Three gold medals. Three meet records.
As the Junior Pan Pacific Championships wrapped up their third evening of competiton on Friday night, Team USA’s Erin Gemmell put together a spectacular effort in the 400-meter freestyle. Adding to her previous victories and meet records in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, Gemmell won over eight laps in a personal-best time of 4:05.07. That effort shattered the previous Junior Pan Pacs standard of 4:07.10, set by Leah Smith in 2012.
Gemmell had the company of Australian Jamie Perkins for the opening 300 meters, but the University of Texas recruit was dominant over the last 100 and pulled away to a convincing decision. Gemmell closed in 1:00.27 and finished more than a second ahead of Perkins, who registered a mark of 4:06.64 for the silver medal. With her 4:05-low clocking, Gemmell became the 11th-fastest American in the history of the event.
