Powers, King And Seliskar Give Americans Three Top Seeds On Day Two Prelims At Junior Pan Pacs

MAUI, Hawaii, August 28. DAY two prelims of the Junior Pan Pacific Championships are now complete, as Australia’s Chelsea Gillett (100 free, 55.18), the United States’ Paul Powers (100 free, 50.09), Lilly King (100 breast, 1:08.47) and Andrew Seliskar (400 IM, 4:19.60) and Canada’s Matthew Ackman (100 breast, 1:01.85) and Mary-Sophie Harvey (4:45.36) garnered the top seeds in their respective events for tonight’s championship finals.
Women’s 100 Free
Australia’s Chelsea Gillett claimed the top seed time in the women’s 100 free this morning, coming from behind in the final heat to touch first in 55.18. Teammate Shayna Jack, the top seed entering the meet, finished right behind in 55.26, while American Stanzi Moseley picked up third in 55.37. China’s Zhu Menghui earned the fourth seed in finals with her 55.50. Amy Bilquist of the United States qualified fifth in a time of 55.79, comfortably ahead of Japan’s Rikako Ikee (56.16). Sachi Mochida of Japan (56.21) and Heather Lam of Canada (56.91) also qualified for the championship final based on the two-per-country rule in the A final.
Australia’s Lucy McJannett (55.57), the United States’ Katie Drabot (56.02), Korea’s Dalin Lee (57.09), Canada’s Lili Margitai (57.30), Mexico’s Ana Revilak (57.50), China’s Zhu Yifei (57.56), China’s Li Tete (57.78) and Canada’s Alexandra Aitchison (57.91) will compete in the consolation final.

Paul Powers of the United States nearly cracked 50 in the men’s 100 free this morning, qualifying first for finals in 50.09. Teammate Blake Pieroni finished a couple tenths behind in 50.32, followed by Australia’s Blake Jones in 50.75. Japan’s Katsuhiro Matsumoto posted the fourth-best time of the day at 50.82, with Canada’s Markus Thormeyer right behind in 50.88. Australia’s Vincent Dai (50.90), Canada’s Mitchel Ferraro (51.34) and Japan’s Fuyu Yoshida (51.49) also qualified for the championship final.
The United States’ Townley Haas (50.37), Australia’s Brayden McCarthy (50.94), Canada’s Cameron Kidd (51.42), Mexico’s Lorenzo Elias (51.70), New Zealand’s Julian Weir (51.95), Japan’s Koki Tanaka (52.66), China’s Jin Chenghao (52.67) and New Zealand’s Dominic Mildon (52.80) will swim in tonight’s B final.

Top seed Lilly King of the United States held onto her first place position in prelims, qualifying first by almost a full second in 1:08.47, ahead of Japan’s Runa Imai (1:09.37). American Jorie Caneta posted the third-best time of the morning at 1:10.43 to secure a spot in the A final. Japan’s Sae Saito picked up the fourth seed with a time of 1:10.99, just ahead of Canadians Kelsey Wog (1:11.18) and Genevieve Robertson (1:11.51). Australia’s Abbey Harkin (1:12.23) and China’s Lin Xinlan (1:13.26) will also compete for gold in tonight’s championship final.
Emily Kopas of the United States (1:10.92), Ayaka Tokunaga of Japan (1:11.20), Maria Jimenez of Mexico (1:13.39), Zhang Meng of China (1:14.43), Georgina Garcia of Mexico (1:16.13), Adi Naivalu of Fiji (1:27.46), Amy McGowan of Fiji (1:29.69) and Makereta Niumataiwalu of Fiji (1:30.41) will compete in the B final this evening.

Matthew Ackman of Canada led the way in the men’s 100 breast prelims with the only sub-1:02 swim of the day at 1:01.85. Connor Hoppe of the United States, who was seeded one one-hundredth faster at 1:01.84, touched second this morning in 1:02.07. Japan’s Ryuya Mura came in third at 1:02.37, with teammate Yuya Hinomoto right behind in fourth at 1:02.84. James Guest of Canada (1:02.89) and Cody Taylor of the US (1:02.90) will be the fifth and sixth seeds tonight, with Australia’s Matthew Wilson (1:03.19) and New Zealand’s George Schroder (1:03.66) rounding out the remaining finalists.
Japan’s Rintaro Okubo (1:02.91), the United States’ Todd Owen (1:03.24), Canada’s James Dergousoff (1:03.35), Australia’s Jake Baggaley (1:03.87), China’s Liu Yunsong (1:04.07), Canada’s Ryder McGinnis (1:04.18), New Zealand’s Ben Walsh (1:04.84) and Mexico’s Diego Hernandez (1:08.09) placed ninth through 16th.

Canada’s Mary-Sophie Harvey cut more than five seconds off her seed time to vault into the top spot in the women’s 400 IM this morning, as she finished in a time of 4:45.36. Japan’s Hiroko Makino finished just under seven tenths behind in 4:46.03, slightly ahead of Leah Stevens of the United States (4:46.21). American Ella Eastin, the top seed heading into the meet, wound up fourth this morning in 4:47.71, well off her seed time of 4:38.97. Japan’s Yura Taniguchi placed fifth in 4:47.95, while Australian Tianni Gilmour touched sixth in 4:49.10. Monika Gonzalez of Mexico (4:53.46) and Alexandra Aitchison of Canada (4:55.08) also earned spots in the A final.

Men’s 400 IM
American Andrew Seliskar led the way in the men’s 400 IM prelims with the only sub-4:20 performance of the morning at 4:19.60. Teammate Curtis Ogren will look to give the US a 1-2 finish in finals with his second place effort of 4:20.17. Bradlee Ashby of New Zealand claimed the third seed in finals with his 4:25.58, just under a second faster than Japan’s Juran Mizohata (4:26.40). Canadians Robert Hill (4:27.68) and Tristan Cote (4:28.80) also earned spots in the final, as did China’s Wang Zhou (4:31.92) and New Zealand’s Liam Albery (4:32.61).
The United States’ Sean Grieshop (4:20.35), Australia’s Joachim Bardrum (4:32.83), Mexico’s Hector Rubalcaba (4:36.55), Canada’s Osvald Nitski (4:38.49), Mexico’s Martin Vazquez (4:52.46), Fiji’s Taichi Vakasama (5:30.68) and the United States’ Corey Okubo (4:20.83) will compete in the consolation final.
