Junior Nationals West: Katie Grimes, Bella Sims Give Top Seeds to Sandpipers; Lydia Jacoby Tops in 100 Breast

The 2022 U.S. Junior Nationals West continued with Day 3 from Austin.

The events for Friday’s prelims session included the men’s and women’s 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.

Here is a look at how each event turned out at Junior Nationals West:

Junior Nationals West: Women’s 400 IM

Sandpipers Olympian Katie Grimes continued her stellar performance at the West meet. The 16-year-old cruised to the top seed in the 400 IM by seven seconds, getting to the wall in 4:03.04.

It was three seconds off of her best time, but saved some energy and set her up for a fast final.

Kayla Han took the second seed in 4:10.82, followed by Caroline Bricker (4:15.87).

Junior Nationals West: Men’s 400 IM

Maximus Williamson cruised to a top seed in the men’s 400 IM in 3:45.08., it is off his best time of 3:42.22, which was the meet record at Juniors West last year.

Teammate Cooper Lucas took the second seed in 3:48.05, while Diego Nosack grabbed the third seed in 3:48.33.

Junior Nationals West: Women’s 100 Butterfly

Nova’s Maggie Schalow raced to the top seed in the 100 butterfly. She got to the wall in 53.17, enough to hold off the field by a few hundredths.

Aquajet’s Emma Kern took the second spot in 53.22, while Clare Watson and Ava Whitaker tied for the third seed, each finishing in 53.32.

Junior Nationals West: Men’s 100 Butterfly

Hayden Bellotti was first to the wall in the men’s 100 butterfly. The 18-eyar-old finishing in 46.43 to earn the top seed heading into finals.

Jacob Wimberly took the second seed in 46.61, followed by Colin Geer (47.03).

Junior Nationals West: Women’s 200 Free

The Sandpipers were at it again in the women’s 200 free.

Bella Sims, 17, claimed the top seed in the event with a swim of 1:44.81.

Teammate Claire Weinstein, 15, took the second spot in 1:45.13.

Katie Grimes, after claiming the top seed in the 400 IM, took the fifth seed in the 200 free in 1:45.95, behind Teagan O’Dell (1:45.15) and Madi Mintenko (1:45.66).

 

Junior Nationals West: Men’s 200 Free

Maximus Williamson made it 2-for-2 in top seeds. After claiming the top spot in the 400 Im, he did the same in the 200 free, getting to the wall in 1:34.71.

Keaton Jones took the second seed in 1:34.82, followed by Chase Mueller (1:35.84).

Junior Nationals West: Women’s 100 Breaststroke

University of Texas swimmer Lydia Jacoby claimed the top spot in the 100 breaststroke. The Tokyo Olympian from Alaska got to the wall in 59.03.

It was a few hundredths of a second off of her seed time.

CROW’s Raya Mellott took the second seed in 59.57, followed by Piper Enge (1:00.14).

Junior Nationals West: Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Nathaniel Germonprez took the top seed in the men’s 100 breaststroke, dropping a half second from his seed time. He touched the wall in 52.59.

Daniel Li took the second spot in 53.31, while Joshua Corn was third in 53.37.

 

Junior Nationals West: Women’s 100 Backstroke

Bella Sims wasn’t finished after the 200 free. She took another top seed, this time in the 100 backstroke. The Sandpipers star got to the wall in 52.11, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Aquatjet’s Emma Kern (52.12).

Alana Berlin took the third seed in 52.73, followed by Aquajet’s Grace Rabb (53.04) and Teagan O’Dell (53.14).

Junior Nationals West: Men’s 100 Backstroke

Keaton Jones claimed the top seed in the men’s 100 backstroke to close the session. Jones got to the wall in 47.54.

Maximus Williamson, swimming a stunning triple, took the second seed in 47.56 after two top seeds earlier in the session.

Luke Logue took the third seed in 47.65.
