Junior Nationals East: Summer McIntosh, Alex Shackell Continue Stellar Meet With Top Seeds

The 2022 U.S. Junior Nationals East continued with Day 3 from Greensboro, North Carolina.

The events for Friday’s prelims session included the men’s and women’s 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.

Here is a look at how each event turned out at Junior Nationals East:

Junior Nationals East: Women’s 400 IM

Sixteen-year-old Lilla Bognar took the top spot in the women’s 400 IM by about a second. She touched the wall in 4:12.06.

GSCY’s Emily Thompson, also 16, took the second spot in 4:13.18.

Sarasota’s Michaela Mattes, 17, has the third seed after a swim of 4:13.58.

Junior Nationals East: Men’s 400 IM

GAAC’s Landon D’Ariano, 17, will be in the middle of the pool for the finals in the men’s 400 IM after taking the top seed in 3:47.58.

Gwinnett’s Baylor Stanton was just behind in 3:47.74, which could be the preview of an extremely close final showdown.

Bolles’ Carter Lancaster took the third seed in 3:50.42.

Junior Nationals East: Women’s 100 Butterfly

Carmel’s Alex Shackell continues her stellar performance at juniors. The 16-year-old claimed the top seed in the 100 butterfly with a swim of 50.97.

Lakeside’s Charlotte Crush was next in 51.52, just ahead of Sarasota’s Summer McIntosh (51.01), who continues to turn heads in her first high-level short-course yards meet.

Junior Nationals East: Men’s 100 Butterfly

GTAC’s Scotty Buff was just ahead of Cavalier’s Thomas Heilman for the top seed in the men’s 100 butterfly.

Buff got to the wall in 45.66, while Heilman cruised in at 45.99, setting up an exciting final.

Will Modglin took the third spot in 46.63 and also could be a factor in finals.

Junior Nationals East: Women’s 200 Free

Sarasota’s Summer McIntosh, Canada’s teen sensation, is at it again. After already swimming the butterfly, she claimed the top spot in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:43.33, just six hundredths of a second off the meet record.

Erika Pelaez took the second spot in 1:46.05, while Sarasota’s Addison Dauicki was third at 1;47.09 and Gator’s Lillie Nesty was fourth at 1:47.46.

Kaii Winkler was nearly a second faster then the field in the prelims of the men’s 200 free to earn the top seed in finals. He got to the wall in 1:34.63.

Jersey Wahoos’ Henry McFadden took the second spot in 1:35.22, followed by SwimAtlanta’s Tristan DenBrok (1:35.45) and Daniel Diehl (1:35.38).

Mason Manta Rays’ Addie Robillard took the second seed in 1:00.71, followed by SwimMac’s Grace Rainey (1:00.80) and Carmel’s Molly Sweeney (1:00.82), setting up an interesting final.

Junior Nationals East: Women’s 100 Backstroke

Fourteen-year-old Charlotte Crush crushed her prelims in the 100 backstroke. The Lakeside swimmer got to the wall in 51.28, just a couple of tenths off of the national age group record for 13-14 (51.03).

Carmel’s Berit Berglund, 17, took the second spot in 51.95.

Erika Pelaez, doing a double, took the third seed in 52.19.
