Schmitt came in at 54.20, which ranks as the fourth-best time by an American this year, trailing Dana Vollmer (53.59), Katie Ledecky (53.75) and Abbey Weitzeil (53.77).
Franklin, representing Colorado Stars, touched second in 54.56, and Tucson Ford’s Geer settled for third in 54.66.
Rebecca Millard (56.04), Lakeside’s Lauren Pitzer (56.63), Tucson Ford’s Bonnie Brandon (56.79), Tasija Karosas (57.27) and Longhorn’s Lisa Boyce (57.32) also competed in the A-final.

Men’s 100 Free
Returning to pool in which he set his first world record 15 years ago, Michael Phelps finished on top in his first event of the weekend. He trailed Matt Grevers at the halfway point, 23.89 to 23.98, before turning on the jets. But he needed a furious finish to hold off a charging Jack Conger. Phelps did so by the fingertip margin of one one-hundredth of a second.
North Baltimore’s Phelps clocked 49.49 for the victory, ahead of Nation’s Capital’s Conger in 49.50. North Baltimore’s David Nolan was the only other man under 50 seconds with his 49.80. Notably, Phelps’ time was much slower than the 48.74 that Caeleb Dressel posted earlier in the evening in Knoxville, Tenn.
Longhorn’s Clay Youngquist was fourth in 50.09, and Tucson Ford’s Grevers fell to fifth in 50.45. CMSA’s PJ Dunne (50.58), Ray Bornman (50.70) and North Baltimore’s Austin Surhoff (51.23) were the other participants in the A-final.

Men’s 200 Breast
Will Licon dominated the men’s 200 breast final. The two-time NCAA champion and new short course yards American record-holder in the event put up a 2:10.68 that ranks him just behind Nic Fink (2:10.51) and Kevin Cordes (2:10.68) as the top Americans in the long course version of the event this season. The time falls just short of his own lifetime best (2:10.02) that he swam on his way to a second-place finish at the 2015 National Championships in San Antonio.
North Baltimore’s Chase Kalisz tried to go with Licon on the first 100 but could not keep pace down the stretch, and Kalisz settled for second in 2:12.57. Longhorn’s Andrew Wilson came in third at 2:16.52.
Tigershark’s Hayden Henry edged Dynamo’s Basil Orr for fourth, 2:17.59 to 2:17.74. Rounding out the top eight were Casey Melzer (2:17.99), Irish’s Trent Jackson (2:18.38) and Dynamo’s Jackson Ford (2:18.85).

A quartet of North Baltimore swimmers swept the top spots in the 400 free. Lotte Friis, who will be a contender for the Olympic final when she represents Denmark in this event at the Olympic Games in August, touched first in 4:06.82, good for the 13th-best time in the world this year.
Cierra Runge used a blazing 30.17 final 50 to pass teammate Allison Schmitt for second. Runge touched in 4:08.04, ahead of Schmitt’s 4:08.36, and another of their teammates, Sierra Schmidt, was fourth in 4:11.15.

Men’s 100 Fly
In a match-up that could be repeated in the Olympic final later this summer, Joseph Schooling edged Michael Phelps in the 100 fly. Schooling, who set U.S. Open records in both butterfly events on his way to NCAA titles in March, went out in a blazing 24.19, ahead of Texas teammate Jack Conger in 24.42 and Phelps in 24.55. But Phelps, as he so often does, came charging on the back half. He just ran out of room.
Schooling touched in 51.58, the seventh-best time in the world for 2016, and Phelps finished second in 51.65, good for ninth in the world rankings. Conger, representing Nation’s Capital, got third in 51.72, which ranks 12th in the world. Phelps and Conger also recorded the top two times by Americans so far this year.
The Woodland’s Tripp Cooper finished a distant fourth in 53.03, just ahead of North Baltimore’s David Nolan in 53.06. Completing the final were CMSA’s Will Glass (53.25), Athens Bulldog’s Pace Clark (53.73) and Tucson Ford’s Channing Dobbs (54.36).
