The Singapore National Olympic Council named Joseph Schooling and Quah Zheng Wen to the nation’s 2016 Olympic Games roster. These two join 19 other athletes on the list so far.
Schooling and Zheng Wen qualified by way of their FINA A cuts. Schooling earned the times in the 100 freestyle (48.45), 200 freestyle (1:47.79), and 200 butterfly (1:55.73) at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.
On his way to a third place finish at the 2015 World Championships last summer, Schooling also secured his berth in the 100 butterfly (50.96). He’ll enter that event as a serious medal contender, and a chance to be the first swimming medalist for Singapore, and only the fifth for the country as a whole. The butterfly specialist, and NCAA Champion would be unlikely to compete in the freestyle events he has qualified.
Zheng Wen is qualified in three events: the 100 backstroke (54.03), 100 butterfly (52.25), and 200 butterfly (1:56.26).
While no women have met FINA A standards, one still could be added, in accordance with the FINA criteria.
The other athletes qualified to represent Singapore include nine sailors, five in table tennis, two in badminton, two in shooting and one in rowing.
