Jordan Tiffany Shines as American Fork Girls, Lone Peak Boys Defend Utah 6A State Titles

The 2020 Utah 6A State Swimming Championships took place on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Lone Peak’s Jordan Tiffany highlighted the meet with a pair of overall Utah state records and Class 6A marks. He won the 100 fly in 47.71 and the 100 back in 48.25 to lower both of his own records.
In addition to Tiffany’s standout meet, seven other Class 6A records were broken:
- Corner Canyon girls – 4×50 medley relay (1:50.32)
- Westlake’s Cameron Barner – 50 free (20.89)
- Corner Canyon’s Rivers Johnson – 100 fly (57.42)
- Corner Canyon’s Rivers Johnson 100 back (56.79)
- American Fork’s Allie Hill – 500 free (5:09.33)
- American Fork girls – 4×50 free relay (1:42.55)
- American Fork girls – 4×100 free relay (3:40.29)
American Fork used their impressive depth to capture their third-straight championship crown with a total of 318.5 points ahead of Lone Peak’s score of 279.5. Tiffany lead Lone Peak to their fourth-straight team title with a final score of 277 over Westlake’s 204.5 points.

Girls Meet

Corner Canyon began the meet as Aliza Smith (27.14), Britta Catmull (32.86), Johnson (25.06), and Eliza Balfe (25.26) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:50.32, two seconds ahead of runner-up Lone Peak’s 1:52.15. Their time broke the previous Class 6A record of 1:51.60 set by Kearns in 2018.
Skyridge’s Katelyn Andrist led the charge in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:58.97 as the first of only two swimmers in the field to crack the two-minute barrier. American Fork’s Talia Thomas sprinted to first place in the 100 free, clocking in for a quick time of 54.90.
Hill dominated the 200 IM, leading from start to finish to post a final time of 2:11.02 en route to besting the field by over four seconds. The junior then went on to successfully defend her state title in the 500 free, turning in a final time of 5:09.33 to lower her own Class 6A mark of 5:16.81 set earlier this season.
Westlake’s Ryan Lincoln splashed-and-dashed her way to the state title in the 50 free, clocking in at 25.11 to out-touch runner-up Callie Anderson (25.13) of Herriman. Riverton’s Skyler Lyon got her hands to the wall first in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:07.44 for the win.
After swimming the fly leg on her team’s winning medley relay, Johnson flew to the top of the podium to collect individual gold in the 100 fly with a time of 58.48 as the lone swimmer under the 60-second barrier. Her time of 57.42 in the morning crushed the old 6A record of 59.30 swum by Summer Shreeve in 2018. She also won the 100 back in 56.79, taking down the old 6A mark of 57.66 she set back in January.
American Fork’s Livvie Adamson (26.05), Paige Kelsey, Annalyn Dean, and Thomas (25.22) combined in 1:42.55 during the 4×50 free relay to eclipse their own Class 6A mark of 1:42.71 set in 2019. Dean (54.90), Kelsey (57.36), Thomas (54.60), and Hioll (53.43) clinched their team title by winning the 4×100 free relay in 3:40.29 to break Lone Peak’s 2018 6A mark of 3:42.62.

Lone Peak began their winning ways as Rex Brunsdale (26.11), Josh Griener (26.50), Jordan Tiffany (21.40), and Kevin Dew (21.46) won the opening 4×50 medley relay in 1:35.47 for a two-second victory over Westlake’s 1:37.09.
Tennessee-bound Tiffany had himself a meet, first eclipsing his own overall Utah state record and Class 6A record of 47.74 in the 100 fly with a new time of 47.71. He then won the 100 back in 48.25, destroying his own state and Class 6A mark of 49.39 he had set back in January.
West’s Rhys Winter cruised to first in the 200 free, stopping the clock in 1:43.46 to win the event by 1.5 seconds. Not too long after that, he earned another gold medal after winning the 500 free – he dropped almost five seconds off his prelims time to claim the event in 4:39.28.
Shortly after helping his team to medley relay gold, Griener was back in the water to win the 200 IM in 1:57.16 as the first of only two swimmers in the event to crack the two-minute barrier. The senior also won the 100 breast, getting his hands to the wall in 58.91 as the first of three races to dip under 60 seconds.
Barney sprinted his way to the state title in the 50 free with a quick time of 20.97; his prelims time of 20.89 broke the previous Class 6A mark of 21.03 set by Greg Simpson last season. Westlake’s Cameron Barney sprinted to first in the 100 free, shaving time off his prelims swim to win the event in a swift 46.90.
Westlake’s Matthew Shawgo (23.21), Nick Anderson (22.59), Ethan Brown (22.31), and Barney (20.33) combined to win the 4×50 free relay in 1:28.44. Tiffany (45.58), Brunsdale (49.40), Griener (48.89), and Dew (47.94) also won the 4×100 free relay in 3:11.81 to claim Lone Peak’s team title.
