Jonah Karschnik, Scott Spear Announce Verbal Commitments to Miami Ohio

NEW COMMITS: Miami University of Ohio has added another pair of verbal commitments for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Williamsburg, Ohio native Jonah Karschnik and Scott Spear of Reading, Mass.

Both talented swimmers will arrive in Oxford as members of the class of 2025 along with Paul Brosky and Diego Pareja.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Miami University. I would like to thank my family, coaches, and teammates that have helped me make this decision. Love and Honor”

Karschnik does his club swimming with Mercy Healthplex Sea Wolves and raced five events at NCSAs in March 2019. Last summer, he earned best times in the 50m fly, 100m fly, and 200m free at NCSAs.

His best times include:

  • 50 fly – 23.49
  • 100 fly – 50.17
  • 200 fly – 1:53.11
  • 200 free – 1:43.39
  • 500 free – 4:41.16

Also competing for Williamsburg High School, Karschnik is a six-time Ohio State Championship finalist. He placed third in the 100 fly and sixth in the 500 free as a junior while taking ninth in the 200 free and 10th in the 100 fly during his sophomore season.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to Miami University! Miami has some of the most driven and motivated athletes, and I can’t wait to work with these athletes and the incredible Miami coaching staff. Go Redhawks!”

Spear swims year-round with SOLO Aquatics and had a great showing at New England Seniors in December where he placed fourth in the 100/200 free, sixth in the 200 fly, and eighth in the 200 IM. He also raced three events at Juniors East in December. 

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:40.40
  • 500 free – 4:41.77
  • 100 fly – 49.99
  • 200 fly – 1:50.16
  • 200 IM – 1:53.95
  • 400 IM – 4:09.54

Last summer, he had five top-15 finishes at New England Seniors, raced to 14th in the 200m free at Geneva Futures, and competed at Junior Nationals. He is currently a senior at Reading Memorial High School.
