The prelims of the men’s 100 freestyle at the FINA world championships featured some of the best in the world battling for a spot in the top 16 places in order to compete in the semifinals. American Nathan Adrian made it safely through in a tie for seventh place, while teammate Jimmy Feigen placed in a tie for 20th.
Feigen, who had a disappointing swim in the men’s 400 freestyle relay prelims on the first day of the meet, posted a 49.12 in the individual event, just .09 slower than his relay time. After the race, he said his legs felt a bit heavy and “I didn’t have that pop going out,” suggesting he did not have a proper taper period for the meet.

Feigen said the relay “might have rattled me a little bit, but you gotta roll with the punches.”
As with Adrian, he shrugged off his place in the prelims, knowing the time and standing doesn’t matter as long as there’s an opportunity to get a second swim.
“I think that was overall a little bit slower than we expected it to be,” he said. “No worries there, really.”
It’s Adrian’s first swim of the meet, as he was unable to swim in the finals of the 400 free relay with the United States failing to qualify.
