Jazz Carlin and Aimee Willmott Withdraw from World Championships

Both Jazz Carlin and Aimee Willmott announced their withdrawals from the upcoming 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest via their respective Twitter accounts.
The original British World Championships roster was announced in April, but now the team will head to Hungary without two-time Olympic silver medalist Jazz Carlin and European Championships medalist Aimee Willmott.
“Both swimmers are a loss to the team but we respect their decisions which we believe will have a positive impact on their long-term futures,” said Bill Furniss, British Swimming head coach. “I’m disappointed for Jazz and Aimee and it is a loss to the team but we will have lots of athletes fully prepared for the World Championships and we’re looking forward to it.”
Both swimmers have given up their spots due to injury. According to Carlin’s Tweet, she has suffered from constant illness and injury all year, and regrets having to miss the World Championships. She did, however, make it clear that she has her sights set on competing in the 2020 Olympic Games:
It’s been a really tough decision to withdraw from this years World Championships but I’ll be back fighting soon! ?? ?? pic.twitter.com/p6VDsBMKGT

Roughly one hour later, Willmott, who finished seventh in the 400 IM in Rio, posted a similar Tweet:

She will be taking a longer break after getting key hole surgery on her knee to determine what the injury is. She plans on re-starting her training in September.
Carlin’s times from the British Championships leave her 14th in the 400 and 15th in the 800 in the World Rankings. Willmott currently sits eighth in the 400 IM. Their absences will certainly have direct effects on the finals in these events.
